RoboCop is one of the gems of sci-fi film creativity showcased throughout the 1980s. Paul Verhoeven’s satirical story led to a whole franchise of media. There were two sequels arriving three years apart, an attempted remake in 2014, a few TV shows, a whole host of comics, and video games.
It’s been a good decade since anything RoboCop sought to grab headlines in film and television, and yet, the IP seemingly hasn’t been as big as it currently is since the turn of the millennium. Particularly in gaming, RoboCop is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and all while Prime Video’s cooking up the iconic character’s return to screens.
RoboCop Running Riot in Rogue City
Pretty much out of nowhere, RoboCop’s return to screens was announced in July 2021 with a full gameplay trailer following in 2022 by publisher Nacon. Developed by Teyon, not much was expected of the game, but when it arrived in late 2023, it proved to be a worthy return to the setting. In fact, it was one of the best surprises of the year.
A very true-to-source shooter, it’s stuffed with all of the action and gore that you’d expect as a fan of the original movie, giving you the power to uphold the law by any means necessary. With the original story that draws faithfully from the trilogy, you get to decide how to fulfill RoboCop’s Prime Directives.
The critical response held the game that sold for half the price of a triple-A game held it at the low end of great, as shown by its Metascore of 72, but users give it a superior 8.1. Look to Steam and over 13,000 reviews average at Very Positive. RoboCop: Rogue City has been such a hit that it boosted Nacon’s quarterly revenues to €59 million.
Such was Rogue City’s success that, in March 2025, a standalone expansion melding RoboCop and The Raid-style story was announced for Summer 2025. However, Rogue City’s not the only gaming outing for the all-cop hero.
In early 2024, RoboCop made its way to the expansive selection of branded online slots. In RoboCop Cash Collect, the official slot licensed from the original trilogy, players patrol the neon-lit streets of Detroit, looking to find the features within the 30-payline game. Infused with the hit Cash Collect feature and with a nudge feature to help players get to the coveted bonus rounds, RoboCop has proven to be a hit in this arena, too.
Readying a Return to Screens
RoboCop first arrived on the big screen, and while later entries weren’t quite as enticing, it cemented itself throughout the 1990s as a pop-culture icon on TV. Now, RoboCop’s making its comeback in gaming, but soon, the setting will return to the small screen.
Prime Video – the platform behind one of the top films ever made by high net worth actor Jason Statham – has a new RoboCop show in the works. Peter Ocko will be the writer and showrunner while James Wan’s Atomic Monster will help as an executive producer. This forward step was announced in September 2024.
So, the presumption is that the team is well in the process of being written before Amazon begins the casting, filming, and production process. Hopefully, like the games released over the last couple of years, the new show stays faithful to the source material and immerses fans back into the crime-ridden future of Old Detroit.
RoboCop has successfully made its way back to the fore, and just in time for Prime Video to cash-in with a new show of their own. Amazon’s streaming service will want to be careful, though, as Rogue City has established a high bar.
