Bingo Games for beginners: What You need to Know

What is bingo?

Dating back decades, bingo is one of the most popular games in the UK. Arriving from the American travelling fairs at the turn of the 20th century, the game was soon adopted at working men’s clubs as a communal pastime. Following WWII, it became a community staple, played in dedicated spaces known as bingo halls.

The game’s simple format makes it an enjoyable experience for all, perhaps especially those new to gaming. Discover how to play below and get stuck in to experience the fun for yourself!

How to play

Choose your platform

First, choose your preferred platform. You can play in person with friends or try a game of online bingo which is a digital representation of the traditional format.

The main benefit of playing physically is the communal atmosphere created through your shared excitement. Online bingo is more convenient because it’s playable anytime to suit your schedule and mood.

Learn the rules

You’ll be pleased to know that the rules of bingo are easy to get your head around, and while the format differs slightly from country to country, the general premise is always the same.

Each player is given a card with rows of numbers and spaces. A ‘caller’ announces the numbers in no particular order, traditionally using a spinnable cage with numbered balls to randomise the draws. The light-hearted dialect Cockney rhyming slang is often used to name the numbers which just adds to the fun! As an example, 22 is ‘two little ducks’ because of the shape of the ‘2’.

When your numbers are called, you mark them off on your card using a dauber. The winners are the first to a line and the first to a full house, and when you win – you shout ‘BINGO!’.

Explore different formats

Bingo in the UK is typically played with 3×9 cards with 15 numbers, five in each row. Lines can be drawn horizontally only. In the USA, players are given a 5×5 card and the first to get two lines also receives a prize. Vertical and diagonal lines are allowed.

Online you’ll find unique updates on the classic game based on notable popular culture such as films and television series.

Staying safe when playing

It’s important to ensure you’re staying safe when playing bingo by setting yourself limits for each session, in terms of spending money and time. When gaming online, ensure you’re using a trusted platform from a company with an official licence from the UK Gambling Commission and check that your personal information and payment details are encrypted.
